Manipur govt decides to deport illegal Myanmar migrants.

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh said on Sunday that 26 Myanmar nationals, who had illegally entered India through the state border, were deported to their country.

Today, a group of 26 Myanmar nationals, who had entered India through the open border of Manipur, were deported to their country. The Government of Manipur reiterates its commitment to provide humanitarian assistance to the war-torn people and ensure their care and dignified return.

However, the state is taking a strong stand against allowing illegal immigrants to stay in Manipur, he added.

The Myanmar nationals were handed over to the neighbouring country's authorities in the border town of Moria by the Manipur Police and central forces, a senior official of the Manipur Home Department said.

Since March 2022, 141 Myanmar nationals, including women and children, have been repatriated in four different phases with the support of the Ministry of External Affairs and central security forces.

Nearly 40,000 people, including women, the elderly and children, have been refugees in 11 districts of Mizoram since the military junta took over in February 2021.

According to the Mizoram Home Department, Myanmar nationals are living in more than 100 relief camps in six districts, while several thousand people are living in the homes of relatives, friends or rented houses.

According to the report, more than 6,000 Myanmar nationals have also taken shelter in the border districts of Manipur. Mizoram and Manipur share 518 km and 400 km of porous borders with Myanmar.

In 2022, the Union Home Ministry had ordered the governments of Manipur and Mizoram to record biometric and biometric data of all Myanmar refugees.
